LUMPER SERVICE

Lumper Service

By Michael Francis |

What does Publix, Winn Dixie, Sysco, and just about all warehouses have in common. They all use 3rd party lumper services to unload their freight. Lumper Services provide tremendous benefits with the level that they unload and palletized freight. They are specialists and professionals and the steady repetition of doing the same loads every day puts them on top of their game to unload freight at your warehouse. When productivity is high operations costs are low.

Swamper Service

By Michael Francis |

In Canada the lumpers are called Swampers. They do the same things as lumpers and unloaders here in the United States. They provide  productive hard labor and you must have a strong back if this is the career for you. Canadian Swampers some days must be able to unload entire loads of product on the floor that equals sometime more than 50,000 thousand pounds. Therefore Canada Swampers must have good backs & spirit.

Unloading Service

By Michael Francis |

Having an unloading service plays a major role in your warehouse and distribution services day to day operations. Not only must you be efficient but you must be safe. Productivity plays a key role in not only labor costs but your entire cost of operation in reference to usage of equipment and other factors that play a role in the warehouse. 2 hour turn around times on carriers is the standard and if you can’t get it done maybe you need a service who can. I good lumper service can unload and break down 25 pallets plus an hour or 400 cases. Some of the facilities we are at we do over 700 cases per man hour per lumper. The lumper service job is one who only benefit is the proficiency by which they unload is reflected in their paycheck. Generally it would cost a arm and a leg to have a temp service doing this. They get paid by the hour so there is no comparison.

Lumping Service -The Benefits Of

By Michael Francis |

There are many benefits of a good lumper service. Here are a few to show you the savings by having a inhouse unloading service.

1. Productivity-  Lumper Services pay their unloaders strictly by productivity either by case, load, or pallet. This means that if they move slow this reflects on their checks. Bottom line they have a huge incentive to move fast. By this increase productivity this is going to lower your manhours and cost of operations.

2. Backup- If you are short receivers, lift operators, or personal you can use the lumpers for temp labor. This will make up for your companies shortage of man power for that specific day.

3. Another Productivity Factor- By having the same lumpers in the warehouse they will master the loads and become able to kick them out faster than any temp labor.

4. Staffing- If the lumpers do a good job inside of the warehouse you can use them as a training ground to see who you want working for you operation company. If they have been unloading trucks for 3-6 months and are efficiant with the equipment and also productive you can hire them. This saves you the time of going through the hiring process, training your on employee’s, only to find out most of them don’t want to work or don’t make your cut.

5. Cost Benefits- Having a lumper service you pay no overtime hours and its usually a set rate per case or load. Stays the same for the term of the contract. Some warehouses don’t have to pay nothing at all. If you have a complete outside warehouse with no logistics its the carriers responsibility to pay.

6. On-Site Management Staff- to assist you with day to day decisions  to maintain fluent dock flow and high productivity levels.

7. Productivity Reports- Weekly reports that show cases, pallets, per hour on a daily and weekly basis. You can identify your problems, and come up with a solution to fix weaknesses in your operations.

8. On-Site Temp. Labor- On site temporary labor for just about any job you are working on. Whether its sanitation, will call, quality control, outbound, inbound, you have that additional staff on hand that is not costing you nothing being in your right hand.

Lumpers Service VS. Street Lumpers

By Michael Francis |

Many warehouses are still barbaric and use lumpers from the streets to unload their trucks. This is a huge no-no and im about to show you the value in giving up this bad business decision. This could cost you your business! Lets start with the benefits.

1. If a lumper services lumper damages product on the dock the company pays for this. Bottom line no shrinkage.  In contrast is a street lumper damages something and its of any value there is a very large chance you will ever see him again.

2. Lumper services sign hold harmless agreements with the warehouse and distributions services. If there is an accident it is the workmans comp. insurance of the lumper service who is liable for the liability. If a street lumper was to get injured he could sue you for everything you have. They are on your property without  insurance.

3. Drug testing! A good lumper service drug tests all employees to verify that they are clean and it puts your warehouse at less risk. The street lumpers are independent the is no one governing what they do. If they were to come to work on drugs you the warehouse would be a fault.

4. Theft! A good lumper service not only background checks their employee’s but also pays for any theft that is caught on the property. The street lumper steals and if gets caught would probably run and you never see the product again.

5. Management System In Place! A good lumper service has chain of command and great management. There is supervisors and managers in place to assist with keep productivity levels at a high.

6. Productivity! When you have the same lumpers doing the same trucks day in and day out your productivity is going to go to the roof. Street lumpers come and go.

What Are Lumpers?

By Michael Francis |

What are Lumpers? Lumpers are professional freight handlers that unload & load freight for carriers “Truckers” at warehouses and distribution centers. Majority of the time they unload it. This entails them sort & segregating the freight to the specific requirements of the slots of the warehouses. Due to the repetitiveness of them doing the same freight over and over their productivity is generally extremely higher than that of hourly workers. Another incentive is the fact that the majority of the time they get paid 100% productivity which in turns lowers the operations cost of the warehouse. Having a lumper service at your warehouse can be truly rewarding.
